Expressing great joy at receiving her letter with news that she and the children are all well; reporting that he has been "labouring hard" since his arrival in Canada, saying that it would not be prudent for her and the family to come out to Quebec in the spring, and noting that if he is not certain of obtaining a permanent position he will return home; mentioning the death of an acquaintance and noting that the winter has not yet set in; describing the hardships of life on the frontier; acquainting her with the movements and positions of the Americans; sending love to his family and wondering if she has brought "one more sweet infant safely in the World."
