Clearly dated 1831 by Scott, but postmarked 1829. See also the Millgate Union Catalogue of Sir Walter Scott Correspondence, which notes that "Although Scott writes clearly 1831 it must have been written in 1829 before the publication of the History of Scotland in Lardners Cyclopaedia. Handwriting also indicates 1829 at the latest."

Summary
Concerning publishing matters, proposing that Scott be paid £500 for a half volume or £1,000 for a full volume. With a postscript discussing a "very curious old picture" in Scott's possession that shows the head of Queen Mary two days after decapitation.
