Summary
Saying he has found the loss of his mother "much worse than I ever imagined I should--and I often took pains to imagine--when I felt that I was not kind or just to her--what my after thoughts would be. But Granite will have no remorses--I had more than you could believe about Father and Mother. And one great one about that poor child--that I trusted to Fate and Time, who have betrayed me--instead of to my own love and strength--if only I had given up everything else and set myself to conquer fate and death I might have conquered. At least I must not feed both of them more now, with vain thoughts."
