Summary
Enclosing letters which he tells her "are not quite fairly to be understood by you, unless you saw those which they were in reply to, which I suppose you would not wish to read--but there were many causes which induced, even a year after this marriage, feelings of unavoidable distrust. You would not have seen this change in my heart--had this not been so. This letter would have been more tender--not less;" adding in a postscript, "the cause of first disputes between E. and me was the positive refusal ever to travel with my parents and me. This cast a gloom over my journey and perpetual doubt--the first discoveries of falsehood resisted as faithfully as I could, but forcing themselves on me."
