Responding to her request for help in recommending her to an art society; saying that he does not know the name of one of the men she mentions and that "the little they know of me would make them only too glad to find any opportunity of showing disrespect to me; for they know that I have always been steadily adverse to them and their mode of work;" saying that the quality of her work should be sufficient to gain membership without his help; saying that "the competition is fearful--for the prizes in the art lottery are enormous and painting is a pleasant way of making money--so that every student in the schools of all England is in the arena with you;" saying that he continues to be ill.
