Summary
Thanking her for her letters and saying "I am not one of the people who have consolatory power--all is very dark and wonderful to me; for people at work, I am helpful; for people in illness and sorrow I can do nothing--for I could do nothing for myself. I want help and therefore I cannot give it;" saying that his mother is still in pain and depressed; commenting that he is "in a state of quite speechless indignation, besides, at the way the 'Powers' as they call themselves, let blood be poured out in Italy."
