Saying he is glad to hear he likes the anonymous Tales [of My Landlord] that were sent to her, and musing on possible authors; discussing the historical context of the novel (The Tale of Old Mortality, the first in the series of Tales of My Landlord); mentioning that his grandmother "who lived to the uncommon age of 98 years" remembered from her young girlhood some of the later incidents described and noting "I mention these minute circumstances in order to make your Ladyship aware how nearly our oral and family traditions connect themselves with these disorderly times."
