Summary
Concerning some modern verses that were sent to Scott as an original poem by Jonathan Swift; discussing Southey's historical essays, regretting that although there are many brilliant passages, "he has not the power of condensing the information which he conveys;" describing some books he is having sent to her; reporting that he is "far advanced" in his work on Swift; noting that when he is finished with Swift he intends to arranged for publication a "very complete collection of songs and poetry respecting the insurrections for I will not call them rebellions of 1715 and 1745" as a supplement to his Border Minstrelsy; hoping to see her in Dumfries. With a lengthy postscript praising Mathurine (Charles Robert Maturin).
