Thanking her for sending Miss Owenson's verses, asking her to give Miss Owenson (later Lady Morgan) his respectful compliments and discussing "the few essays I have made in the craft of reviewing;" noting that Lord Melville has left Scotland; referencing Canning's political career; regretting that he cannot write her any verses on the subject of friendship at present, citing his busy schedule as a Clerk of Session; promising to send two Miscellanies and some verses [from The Lady of the Lake], hoping for Lord Abercorn's input; referencing his happy marriage, which "proceeded from the most sincere affection on both sides which has rather increased than diminished during twelve years' marriage."
