Summary
Discussing, at length, what sort of young woman she was growing up to be; saying how pleased he is that she thinks so well of him; telling her "this is a time in which all of us--but especially young girls entering into life--need the best strength we can win--either by our own efforts or by others' help;" saying he believes he can help her sort out what sort of person she is; telling her that "the first question which Youth or Maiden should put to themselves--as soon as they are able to think seriously of anything-- 'What sort of person am I; what am I good for--what bad for? Where lies my strength--where my danger--How big am I? as compared with other creatures--Am I really cleverer or stronger than most--if so, am I also wiser?"
