Regretfully reporting the decline of Mr. Mackenzie's health, and discussing a possible solicitation to Lord Melville concerning the expected vacancy; discussing his employments and income in relation to the possible appointment to Mackenzie's post, hoping that he would not be required to give up his sherrifdom to accept it; mentioning that his annual income is about £1500 per year and noting that "the public has been very favourable but this is a precarious resource," but discussing his desires to save something for his family. Asking for her response to Marmion and wondering if the Marquis has read it.
