Ruskin bought the manuscript of The Roadside Songs of Tuscany by Francesca Alexander, an American artist, whom he met in Florence in 1882; Ruskin edited it and published it in twelve parts (1884-1885).
Written on stationery embossed "Brantwood, / Coniston. Lancashire;" Lancashire has been crossed out and Ambleside written beneath it in the author's hand.

Summary
Thanking him for his letter; telling him he is not well and can "scarcely hope for a good New Year for anybody except for perhaps Miss Alexander and her mother;" telling him that he has ordered the Roadside Songs to be sent to him regularly.
