Notes
Mr. George Baker, a Birmingham merchant, gave one of the first gifts to the Guild of St. George; seven acres of woodland at Bewdley in Worcestershire. Baker would ultimately succeed Ruskin as Master of the Guild.

Summary
Concerning his selection and purchase of shells, an agate and a "little chalcedony" from a recent shipment from Damon; noting that "I never buy shells either for locality or rarity, but only for beauty;" taking exception to the prices charged by Damon; requesting that the catalogue he was returning to Damon be sent to George Baker, Esq, Beaucastle, Bewdley; requesting that Damon send him no more shells and when he does send agates "which you think curious say why you think them so and where they came from;" in a different hand, a postscript indicating that "Mr. Ruskin bids me open this to ask if you will kindly let him know who your correspondent in Uruguay is."
