Summary
Apologizing for his delay in responding. Concerning edits to the manuscript of "Sir Tristrem," the first part of which he has sent to the printers; discussing the difficulty in accurately transcribing the insular G and lamenting other idiosyncrasies in the Scotch dialect, blaming the Picts, and discussing the introduction of French words into the Scotland. Reporting that his Border Ballads are nearly completed; discussing medieval romances, especially Graysteil, and wishing he had access to an old manuscript of that romance; mentioning the ambiguous provenance of a manuscript in Edinburgh, and outlining the reasons why he is "strongly inclined to pronounce [it] to be as early as Edward 3d." Encouraging him to include "Roswal and Lillian" among his romances.
