Maupertuis had responded to Koenig's letter (MA 3874.10) of 10 December 1751, informing Koenig that although he found his explanation satisfactory, the Berlin Academy had not. Schumann notes that "the proceedings of the Berlin Academy against Koenig, undertaken despite the latter's request to Maupertuis to prevent this, marked a new stage in the "escalation" of the quarrel."
