Notes
Dating: Hearn's relationship with Ellen Freeman seems to have formed in 1875. In 1876, they argued, and in 1877 Hearn moved to New Orleans.--Cf. Summary
Thanking him for telling her that she loves "a mere phantom," and begging Watkin to "make him a reality." Suggesting that he give Hearn a sleeping draught so that she may "have him once to look upon." Acknowledging Hearn's faults, but noting that if she could have married him she would have reproduced him without faults. Lamenting that he never loved her, and begging again to see him while he is asleep, noting that she will leave before he wakes. Stating "I cannot do anything in return for you, only give you my kisses, I have no more to give, for he holds fast my love, his hand will be upon me till I am buried in my grave."
