Dating: Hearn's relationship with Ellen Freeman seems to have formed in 1875. In 1876, they argued, and in 1877 Hearn moved to New Orleans.--Cf. Summary
Assuring him that she will not share his letters to her with others, and begging him to burn all her "foolish" correspondence. Stating: "You are yourself a phantom. I grab for you with all the force desire conceives, and you are lightly gone. You make me desperate," and "at last" bidding him goodbye.
