Notes
Dating is based on Gray's alphabetical catalog which includes books from the mid-1740s. He was apparently still using this catalog in the 1760s because it includes a list of books he has purchased since coming to London in 1760.
Part of a collection of Gray's catalog of his library (MA 164-5); notes on his reading (MA 166-172); and a copy of Gray's will (MA 173). Items are bound individually but housed together in one drop-spine box. Items are described separately (MA 165-173).
This collection also contains a library catalog arranged alphabetically (MA 164).
Summary
Gray's list of the books in his library, arranged in sections including: "Libri Classici"; "Grammarians, Antiquaries, &c"; "Poetry, History, Travels, &c"; and "Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, & Antiquities." Also includes "Books bought since I came to London, 1760," organized by size (folio, quarto, and octavo) with price paid. A final section lists his recent acquisitions in classical, French, and Italian books.
