Summary
Expressing great indignation a the receipt of a "pecuniary parcel," noting that it "degrades" him, and discussing his honour and integrity. Thanking him for a copy of Thomson's collection, praising his preface. Expressing reluctance to return the list (presumably of songs to be published), and noting that Burns never copies his own letters. Discussing poems, mentioning "The flowers of the forest," "I wish I were where Helen lies," his "The Lea-rigg," "the bony Brucket lassie" ("the production of that odd being, Balloon Tytler"), his "Ther'll never be peace till Jamie comes hame," and his "O let me in this ae night." Praising Thomson's collection, stating "Being a Bard of Nature, I have some pretensions to Second Sight" and prophesying that Thomson's great great grandchild will be proud of his ancestor's work. With a postscript discussing subscribers.
