Notes
Part of a large collection of letters to Cyrus Field and documents related to the transatlantic telegraph cable. Items in the collection are described in separate records; see MA 140 for more information.
Signed "Napier & Ettrick." The letter must be written after 1872 because that is when Napier assumed the title Baron Ettrick of Ettrick. It is more likely written in the 1880s when Napier lived at Thirlestane Castle on his estate in Selkirkshire, Scotland.

Provenance
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan from the New York Co-operative Society, 1909.
Summary
Apologizing for not replying sooner; declining a dinner invitation; hoping Field's health is good and his "interests continue to prosper"; noting that his letter is sealed with a stone mounted on a piece of the original transatlantic cable wire; remembering the 1858 dinner to celebrate the first transatlantic cable.
