Michael Field was the pseudonym used jointly by Katherine Bradley and her niece Edith Cooper. Lucas Malet was the pseudonym of Mary St. Leger Harrison.

Mentioning his review of Michael Field and noting that he has just read Malet's "Counsel of Perfection." Referencing his upcoming trip and describing his ennui. Noting that Adelaide is away (hop picking in Kent) until Wednesday, and that in the meantime he dines "desolately" at the Poland and listens to extracts from her letters. Mentioning their collaborative novel "The Passion of Dr. Ludovicus," noting that he "can make no suggestion about" it.
