Notes
Dated in Flower, p. 100.
Dowson and Moore collaborated on "The Passion of Dr. Ludovicus" in 1889; it was sent to many publishers but accepted by none. Their collaborative novel "Felix Martyr" was never completed. Dowson is unduly pessimistic about the death of The Critic; it survived for another year, when it merged with the Society (19 June 1890).
Part of a large collection letters from Ernest Dowson to his close friend Arthur Moore, the English solicitor and writer, with whom Dowson wrote four collaborative novels. Items are cataloged individually; see related collection record (MA 1625) for more information.
Written from Church End, Woodford. Addressed to My dear Moore. Instead of a signature, Dowson added a rough sketch of the yacht "Rover," alluding to Moore's cruise which took him over the same waters Dowson had so recently traversed.
Provenance
Sale (Sotheby's, 20 December 1954, lot 205); gift of the Fellows with the special assistance of H. Bradley Martin in 1954.
Summary
Lamenting his lack of tobacco and describing an outing with Victor Plarr. Referencing the demise of The Critic, assuming that it was not published that week and noting that if it has been issued, it is definately the last number "unless there happen a miracle." Referencing Dowson's article "The Cult of the Child" which was intended to appear in that issue, and promising to send Moore a copy if it was indeed printed (it was). Mentioning that he intends to send the manuscript of their collaborative work "The Passion of Dr. Ludovicus" to more publishers, and discussing characters and plot points of their novel in progress, "Felix Martyr."
