Summary
Saying that he thinks he should not accompany Macready on board the steamer at Liverpool because "it will be crowded with Americans"; noting that he fears that after the last installment of Martin Chuzzlewit his very presence will "bring down upon [Macready] every species of insult and outrage"; explaining that [Frederick] Marryat urged him not to go to Liverpool; alluding to "the monstrous falsehood, the beastly attacks even upon Catherine [Dickens]; which were published all over America ... on [Dickens'] mere confession that the country had disappointed" him; asking Macready not to take offense at anything he hears said against Dickens in the United States; suggesting that any letters he writes to Dickens should be enclosed in a letter to someone else.
