Dickens had paid Webster £50 on 1 May for the original of his frontispiece to the Cheap Edition of Nicholas Nickleby ("Dotheboys Hall: The Brimstone and Treacle Scene"). The 12 guineas were presumably Chapman & Hall's share for their use of it in the Edition.--Cf. Storey, p. 377, n. 4.

Asking Chapman to forward the half yearly accounts [for the Cheap Edition of January-June 1848] to Dickens at Broadstairs. Also asking Chapman to deposit 12 guineas into Dickens' account at Coutts & Co. and to "charge it against the Nickleby as paid to Mr. [Thomas] Webster."
