Dickens is mistaken in thinking the accounts referenced in this letter are incorrect. Chapman had divided the six months' advertising expenses almost equally between the accounts for Pickwick, the Clock, and Chuzzlewit, and the low returns for American Notes bore the cost less well than the others.--Cf.
