Summary
Writing in reference to an article "on the 649th page of your issue of September 27th," entitled "Peter Gilsey's Collection," which claimed that "[Nathaniel] Hawthorne was first engaged to Elizabeth Peabody, but meeting her younger sister, Sophia, fell in love with her"; arguing that this is "a foolish and mischievous fiction; cruel to [Sophia]; unjust to [Elizabeth]; and libellous on the memory of Hawthorne; and it is also utterly absurd and impossible on the face of it"; giving evidence for why this accusation must be wrong; saying that Elizabeth "tempermentally irritated [Hawthorne] from the first."
