Hawthorne kept this notebook from May, 1859, to August, 1862: the earliest entry (p. [1]), which describes a farewell visit to the Barberini picture-gallery with Sophia and Julian, is dated May 15th, 1859; and the final entry, which contains a note written at West Gouldsborough, Maine, is dated August 15th, 1862. After the final entry, remaining ca. 80 pages are blank.
No portions of text fully canceled with dark brown or black ink. Pages numbered 1-73, [1]-4 by Hawthorne.
