Hawthorne kept this notebook from October, 1857, to January, 1858: the earliest entry (p. 1), which describes a sojourn to Coventry with Sophia, is dated 1857, October; and the final entry, which describes the Hawthorne family's journey to Rome, and its bad weather, is dated Jany 24th [1858].
No portions of text fully canceled with dark brown or black ink. Pages numbered 1-189 by Hawthorne (omitting 23 and placing 24 between 25 and a second 25).
Pages 1-112 are part of the collection of Hawthorne's "English notebooks," which are described in seven individual records (MA 581-587). Pages 113-189 are part of the collection of Hawthorne's "French and Italian notebooks," which are described in four additional records (MA 588-591).

Summary
Describing daily activities and excursions in London with his wife, Sophia Peabody Hawthorne, and children, Una, Julian, and Rose. Recording observations and describing the beginning of the Hawthorne family travels throughout France and Italy, noting (on 10 January 1858) that the sculpture at the Louvre "shamed the sculpture gallery of the British Museum out of sight." With references to educator and translator Ada Adeline Shepard, who traveled with the family. (Shepard would marry Henry Clay Badger in 1859 and change her name to Ada Shepard Badger).
