A very few portions of text fully canceled with dark brown or black ink. Pages numbered 1-260 by Hawthorne (repeating number 71 for 73 and 257 before 258). A strip of about 4 cm excised from the middle of p. 193-194.
Hawthorne kept this notebook from June, 1856, to May, 1857: the earliest entry (p. 1), which describes his trip to Gloucester from Liverpool (noting that "English railway carriages seem to [Hawthorne] more tiresome than [American ones]"), is dated June 29th, 1856, Saturday; and the final entry, which describes his trip from Southport to Lincoln, is dated Friday, May 22nd, [1857], at Lincoln.
