A very few portions of text fully canceled with dark brown or black ink. Pages numbered 1-243 by Hawthorne (repeating numbers 106-115 between 115 and 116). Page 243 and remaining leaves blank.
Hawthorne kept this notebook from October, 1855 to June, 1856: the earliest entry (p. 1), which describes a visit to Worcester with Julian, is dated October 14th Sunday [1855]; and the final entry describes a boardinghouse near Southampton, where the Hawthorne family will be vacationing, whose proprietor Mrs. Hume is "good and well-meaning" but "on the whole, a wearisome and unintentionally annoying sort of person," is dated June 18th Wednesday [1856].
