Summary
Telling her that he is responding to her last letter rather than the one he just received because he wants to wait until he is alone to read her most recent letter; saying he won't address her informally using "tu" because the tone of one's language is conditional upon place and time; alluding to a fable by La Fontaine (L'âne et le petit chien); suggesting that they meet at her rooms so she can show him "toute nue" the truth of her feelings for him; returning her book and comparing his interest in reading the book to his interest in her.
