Provenance
MA 81.9-13 were in a sale (London, Sotheby's, 18 June 1890, lots 1-3) and were subsequently purchased by Pierpont Morgan from Pearson in 1890. MA 81.6 and MA 81.8 were in the Edwin W. Coggeshall sale (New York, Anderson Galleries, 25 April 1916, lots 204-205), and purchased by J.P. Morgan, Jr., before 1922. The remaining items (MA 81.1-5, 14) were acquired around 1922 (see accession books).
Summary
Collection consists of seven letters, a speech, and three playbills related to Wilkie Collins's "The Frozen Deep;" as well as the original autograph manuscript of the play; a prompt copy of the play in the hand of Charles Dickens; and a fair copy of the story as arranged for serialization.
