Telling her his plans for traveling through Italy and returning to England in December; mentioning that Dickens' arrival at Lausanne "produced a prodigious sensation in the English colony" there; describing an unpleasant journey from Geneva to Chamounix and the "overwhelming vastness of the scenery of Switzerland"; noting that the valleys of Switzerland seem unhealthy and many people suffer from a "hideous deformity called the goitre"; giving details of their passage over the Simplon Pass and through Italy along the Lago Maggiore.
