Collection contains 67 letters written by Thackeray to the literary hostess Jane Brookfield; 4 letters to Jane and William Brookfield; and 16 letters to William Brookfield. Collection also contains 7 letters from Jane Brookfield to Thackeray and one sketch by Thackeray. Twelve letters are accompanied by envelopes, and there are three additional envelopes that have not been matched to a letter. Letters are very personal, and concern Thackeray's writing, travels and feelings for Jane Brookfield. Some letters reference struggles with his "blue devils" and a few are illustrated with sketches.
