Summary
Alluding to a misunderstanding between them; telling his mother that he feels he has "had very little of those ... kindnesses which are the life and meaning of a family"; informing her that he wants to set the record straight because he feels she is unjust in accusing him of ingratitude; complaining that she did not make enough effort to secure his social position in his childhood; noting that the American papers slander him because she left her husband and Monaco; accusing her of saying bad things about his new wife; asking her not to speak of him or his wife to others; expressing his wish that "some day [she] may see reality as others see it."
