Notes
Part of a large collection of letters primarily from Francesca Alexander to Joan Severn. Items in this collection are described in individual records.
Probably referencing the death of Alexander's "Fratello," John Ruskin, on 20 January 1900, and written over many days (Alexander notes that she "began this letter more than a week ago, and was not able to finish it"); completed and dated on 24 August.
Signed "from your affectionate Sorella Francesca."
Summary
Concerning Severn's health, noting that Alexander "was greatly grieved to hear of [her] illness, but not very much surprised; for [she has] had more come on [her] within a year than human nature could bear, of sorrow, fatigue, and responsibility," and acknowledging that "life can never be for [Severn] again what it has been." Noting that the Alexanders will be travelling presently to their "poor Marina at Bassano," where they will stay until October.
