Part of a bound collection of 56 letters and notes from Thomas Carlyle, 7 signed receipts, 4 prints, and a photograph; items in the collection are described individually (MA 741.1-68).
The envelope reads in an unknown hand: "Mr. Carlyle's autos. (7 specimens) / for the Gral[?] / Photo: 19 June 1855 / Get from Mr. Tait the date of this / year and day." The photo referred to is probably MA 741.44. The verso of the envelope has a Chapman and Hall seal.
The letter is dated "Saturday" and "1868."
