Description

1 item (4 pages) ; 22.8 x 36.9 cm (unfolded)

Notes

With mark of seal or wafer, addressed to Miss Austen, Chawton, "By favour of Mr. Gray"; written from 23 Hans Place.
"From Hans Place, Augt 18th, For Lady K." written on the address panel, presumably in Cassandra Austen's hand.
The date is based on Austen's date, "Tuesday morning," and the note about the date on the address panel. August 18 was not a Tuesday in 1814; August 16 and August 23 are the two possible Tuesdays that are close to August 18. August 23-24 confirmed by Le Faye, "Jane Austen: Some Letters Redated,' Notes & Queries 232: 4 (December 1987), 478-81.
The first page and a half are written "Tuesday morning"; "Wednesday morning" appears in the middle of p. 2.
Forms part of a collection of 41 letters from Austen to her sister and two prints (MA 977.1-43).
High reserve.

Inscriptions/Markings

Watermark: Horn inside shield over letters "CW".

Provenance

Bequeathed by Cassandra Elizabeth Austen to Fanny, Lady Knatchbull, in 1845; inherited by Lord Brabourne, 1882; probably part of Lot 1104, Sotheby's (11-14 May 1891); Alfred Morrison sale, (10 December 1918, lot 2154); purchased by J.P. Morgan, Jr. from the New York dealer Ernest Dressel North in 1920.

Summary

Reporting on her journey to London and commenting on her stay in London with her brother Henry. The letter mentions Maria Edgeworth's Patronage.
