Notes
Though text is in French, the paper and context indicate a probable English origin.
Watermarks: Paper watermarked with the regal George crown and cipher with the number 96, probably representing the year 1796; therefore this stock is from the period when English papermakers were legally required to include the date in their marks. A gathering of blank leaves at the end contains a Britannia watermark, first created for the English market in Holland earlier in the 18th century.
Manuscript is undated, but probably dates to ca. 1796.
Illustrations in pen and ink and watercolor.

Summary
A handmade picture Bible for children depicting major scenes from Genesis, including the creation of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden, the temptation of the serpent, the subsequent expulsion, and the conflict of Cain and Abel. Noah gathers the animals for the flood and he and his family worship when the land rises as the flood abates. The tower of Babel, Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, and Jacob's ladder are other early images, all of which are accompanied by Biblical references to chapter and verse. Major elements of the New Testament are also included, and the manuscript ends with a double-page depiction of the crucifixion of Christ and the thieves.
