Concerning an effort to assemble a collection of maps of the United States. Gallatin writes: "I also enclose the memorandum of maps wanted to which I beg leave to call your attention. We should try to obtain even duplicates wherever practicable, as where we have but one copy, it will be necessary to have manuscript transcripts made at Washington for the purpose of being communicated on 1st January next to the British minister [Charles R. Vaughan], keeping the engraved original (which alone we can adduce as evidence) to be laid before the Arbiter."
