The verso of this letter contains Richardson's draft reply, titled "Answer" and written the following day, on August 8, 1754. Written in an elderly and infirm hand, Richardson expresses his great disappointment that he will not receive a visit from Clairaut: "In this last Visit to England, I did hope to have been often favoured by your Company. Your Absence and your Sickness I have greatly regretted. And must I now receive only a written farewell? I thank you, however for that Favour." The reply is signed "S.R."

Summary
