In the white giant's thigh : autograph manuscript draft of the poem, undated [ca. 1951].

An early draft of the poem that appeared in "In Country Sleep." This draft, which establishes the themes and structure of the poem, consists of 38 lines of which only the first sixteen remain in their present order in the published version of the poem. The remaining 22 lines show signs of considerable further revision. The verso of the first leaf has isolated notes, trial rhyme schemes and rhyme words, and individual revised lines. On a smaller second leaf there are twelve lines of poetry that represent a later, unfinished, version of lines 17-26 of the published version of the poem. The verso of this second leaf contains a prose composition concerning Welsh artists, beginning: "Five artists -- if you will excuse us -- of Wales are all living and working in Wales, four of us in Swansea."
