On the advice of his doctor, Manet spent the summer and fall of 1880 convalescing at Bellevue, outside Paris. He wrote to friends and family, illustrating about forty of his letters with watercolor sketches. This is one of two illustrated letters in the Morgan's collection written to Mlle Marguerite, the younger sister of his friend Mme Jules Guillemet; the other letter is accessioned as MA 4716.1 and is separately cataloged.
