Notes
This letter was written the month after Zola's manifesto "J'accuse" appeared in L'Aurore (on January 13, 1898), and before Dreyfus's conviction was overturned.
Summary
Reminding Zola that they met at a lunch with the editor Heinemann, at his club in London, and praising extravagantly Zola's reporting on the Dreyfus affair in France; saying that he joins "_all_ our colleagues of the pen...and of the soul" in a "communal outcry" and that all of England and all of America are "inflamed and indignant" [at the treatment of Alfred Dreyfus]; and praising Zola's "rare and solitary courage."
