Includes an empty leather folder, inscribed "To dearest Bob from his affect sister Mina / May 22 1843" and a folder of manuscript material including a letter from Ballantyne to David Douglas, 1859 Nov. 30 (with envelope), sending the first number of the magazine; various manuscript gatherings torn from a binder, including a title page for the magazine, several articles including "Anecdotes of the opossum," "Rupert's land," "Boots who ate a match with a troll," "The Gorilla," "The Leviathan," "Chemical recreations," "New Years day in the Arctic regions," chapter 3 ("The snow shoe journey") of an unidentified work, and "The opossum and kangeroo mice." Interleaved at various points in the manuscript are additional notes. All material has been left in its original order.
