Notes
Wilson and Carey became friends in 1958 when Jason Epstein, then editor of Anchor Books at Doubleday, conceived the idea of a series of children's classics in an inexpensive paperback format. He named the series Looking Glass Library and enlisted Edward Gorey as designer and Carey as managing editor. He then described the project to Edmund Wilson, W. H. Auden, and Phyllis McGinley, all three of whom agreed to become consulting editors for the series. This group met at intervals to determine which titles to publish.
