The 1844 letter concerns religious matters; in the 1848 letter, Greeley discusses the expansion of slavery in the territories (Greeley expresses the opinion that California and New Mexico will soon be admitted, and "that will obviate all difficulty as we know that neither of them, as organized now, will tolerate slavery, however friendly to it we may be"), cheap postage, and his family.
