With a contents note on front free endpaper in the hand of Sydney Cockerell: "Containing a leaf like those in the book of Poems written out for Lady Burne-Jones, 1870 / 3 leaves of a large Heimskringla which I think was carried no further, c. 1875 / a leaf begun for the Virgil belonging to C. Fairfax Murray with trials of writing on the other side / All written by William Morris. / S.C.C. / Six more discarded leaves of the Virgil were given me by Charles Fairfax Murray Nov 23 1916. The date is 1875." Another note on same page: "Exhibited at Victoria & Albert Museum, Morris Centenary Exhib 1934, nos. 230, 242, 244.
Items 1-2 and the six copies of drawings by Burne-Jones are on paper; the remaining leaves are of vellum.

Items 2-4 were given to Cockerell by Jane Morris in 1899 (front free endpaper inscribed: "S.C. Cockerell from Jane Morris / April 29.1899"); six more leaves (item 5, the "discarded Virgil) were given to him by Charles Fairfax Murray in 1916 and bound into the volume. Sold by Cockerell at Sotheby's (London, 1956 Dec. 10, lot 93); Bookplate of J.R. Abbey, no. 6736; sale (Sotheby's, London, 1970 Dec. 1, lot 2902); gift of Norman Strouse in 1975.
