Originally folded in a sheet of paper labeled in the hand of Sophia Hawthorne or Rose Hawthorne Lathrop that reads: "Ivy from the old Bridge over 'Bonnie Doon,' on which Tam o'Shanter rode, with the witches after him / June 30. 1857"; originally wrapped with a paper note in the hand of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop that reads: "Scotch memento, gathered by my mother. RHL."
