Summary
Published pp. 123-124, with five omissions: (1) [beginning] Perth gossip. Mrs. Ruskin has a cook for them and is in treaty for a housemaid. Effie understands French, but forgets idioms and stammers when she speaks, "but if we stayed a little while... I would soon learn." Her mother takes too gloomy a view of French affairs: except for lack of visitors, they see little evidence of Revolution. Leaving Abbeville on Tuesday, they reached Eu, where there was a fête in honor of the Virgin: descriptions of the immense and picturesque Normandy caps worn by old women, and of a fair, with jugglers, dancers, and above all, a quack doctor [into p. 123: the chateau at Eu and the Hotel; their trip to Rouen]; (2) [end of para. 1, p. 123] The Cathedral of Rouen is "perfectly marvellous" and under it sit women like this: sketch of woman's cap, by Effie [into p. 123: John's desperation as he sees men at work, "restoring"]; (3) [p. 123, three lines from end, after it] sketch of a woman's hat which John drew in pencil which she has liked. "This is a most entertaining town," with remarkable churches and wooden houses. A stone fountain stands where Joan of Arc was burned [into p. 123: John's plans for Daguerrotypes]; (4) [p. 123, last line, after last] the beautiful view of the Seine, the clear weather, the stone-paved streets, the shops remarkable for fruits, flowers, and sweetmeats, of which they will buy some for the children [into p. 123: John's pleasure in her happiness and his dependence upon her]; (5) their kindest love.
